Things to Consider When Shopping for Under Seat Subwoofers

Before we dive into the products it’s important to learn about what you’re shopping for. When shopping for under seat subwoofers there are features and factors you need to consider. You want to know how big they are, how loud they are, and if they’ll fit in your vehicle.

Size

First and foremost, we’ll begin with size. Under seat subwoofers are measured in inches. Most products on our list will fit under the driver’s side seat and passenger’s side seat but you should always take your own measurements to make sure there are no issues. Most under seat speakers will be less than 3 inches in height, so make sure you have enough room under your seats.

Measuring is always important because you don’t want to end up with a speaker that doesn’t fit.

Wattage

The wattage rating on an under seat speaker determines how much power it can handle. While many people believe that wattage correlates to sound, that’s not always the case. Not all 1,000-watt speakers are louder than 200-watt speakers. Therefore, when we’re referencing wattage we’re focusing on how much power it can handle.

Still, higher wattage speakers tend to be louder than low wattage speakers simply because they can handle more energy.

Speaker Size

Speaker size is one of the most important factors to consider. The size of the speaker determines how loud it will be, how much bass you’ll feel, and whether or not it will shake your vehicle and make you uncomfortable while driving. The common sizes for under seat speakers are 8 inches and 12 inches.

8-inch speakers are loud but the bass is milder. Speakers of this size won’t shake your vehicle or make you uncomfortable while driving. Still, with an 8-inch speaker, you might sacrifice some sound quality and bass. On the other hand, 10-inch under seat speakers pack a punch. These speakers have a ton of volume and bass. The tradeoff is that you might feel discomfort when driving, especially if it’s under your seat.

Regardless of the sizes you choose, both are viable options.

Price

Under seat speakers have a wide price range. Some products are less expensive than others and the price is influenced by the quality, wattage, speaker size, and other factors. Still, that doesn’t mean a cheaper speaker is always of less quality. For example, an 800-watt speaker might be cheaper than a 1,200-watt speaker but that has nothing to do with quality.

To help you narrow down your options we’ve broken down the cost of each speaker and placed them into one of three price categories. The categories are:

$: Around $100

$$: Around $150

$$$: Over $200

Now that you know what to look for, we’ll take you through the 8 best under seat subwoofers.

Editor’s Rating: 5/5

Quick Facts:

The Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is one of the few products that come with everything you need right out of the box. It comes with the speaker, a wiring harness, the wires to ground and hook it up to your speaker system, and more. In fact, it’s one of the few products that can be seamlessly integrated into aftermarket speaker systems and radios. The Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is also well-made and features a PVC jacket that protects it from extreme weather conditions.

What Sets It Apart

The Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is unique because of what it comes with and how it’s made. It’s also one of the most durable speakers and can handle rain, snow, and temperatures between -40° Fahrenheit and 220° Fahrenheit.

Things to Consider

The Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is solid but it’s not perfect. The biggest issue with the under seat speaker is that it doesn’t give you any flexibility. When installing the speaker you need to use the wire and tools the package provides you with. While this works for most shoppers, people with custom setups might want to look elsewhere.

Who It’s For

The Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is one of the simplest products to use and install. If you’re looking for a hassle-free process and great sound, you can’t go wrong with this under seat speaker. That said, it’s also a great choice for people who need a durable speaker. Overall, it comes with more premium features than most under seat speakers around.

What Sets It Apart

Compared to other under seat speakers, the JBL BassPro SL 8-inch 125W RMS Powered Under-Seat Compact Subwoofer performs better and produces the best sound. While it’s not the loudest under seat speaker, it produces a superior sound to most products.

Things to Consider

We’re fans of the JBL BassPro SL 8-inch 125W RMS Powered Under-Seat Compact Subwoofer but that doesn’t make it perfect. The biggest drawback to the speaker is the lack of a remote to control the bass. While JBL does carry remotes for the speaker (sold separately), they’re not always in stock and cost extra. That said, the lack of a remote isn’t the only drawback. The JBL BassPro SL 8-inch 125W RMS Powered Under-Seat Compact Subwoofer is also more expensive than most products. If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative the Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer is a great choice.

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Quick Facts:

The Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max is a high-wattage under seat speaker designed for those who don’t want to sacrifice size for sound quality. It also comes with a remote bass knob, temperature protection, and a sturdy aluminum design. The Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max also won’t shake when you turn the bass up, even when you max it out. This makes the listening experience more crisp and smooth.

What Sets It Apart

The Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max is unique because of the wattage and sound range it offers. It’s one of the few 10-inch subwoofers that can handle 550 watts and still produce a crisp sound. It’s also an easy speaker to use and install. While it doesn’t come with everything you need to install it, you can get the extra wires and harnesses that you need to get the job done.

Things to Consider

The Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max is a solid product. It’s one of the few products that can handle high-wattage applications and it’s big enough to make you feel the bass. That said, it comes with a few drawbacks. First and foremost, it’s bigger than most under seat speakers. Therefore, it might not fit under the seats of smaller cars. Another drawback is that it doesn’t come with everything you need to install it.

Who It’s For

If you’re looking for a subwoofer that produces a sound close to what you’d find in a trunk subwoofer, the Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max is your best option. It’s not the most compact under seat speaker but it can handle the highest wattage, produce the biggest sound, and it doesn’t shake your vehicle. For these reasons, it’s one of our favorite choices for all of the bass-heads out there.

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Quick Facts:

It’s one of the easiest products to tune along with your car’s stereo system and the sound can be customized to your preferences. While there is no remote, you shouldn’t need to make adjustments once you have everything set for the first time.

Things to Consider

We love the Kenwood KSC-PSW8 Under Seat Powered Subwoofer but it’s expensive. It’s one of the most expensive under seat subwoofers on our list and it’s only an 8-inch subwoofer. There are 10-inch subwoofers like the Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max that produces a similar sound and more bass. That said, it depends on the type of sound you’re looking for and how much shaking you can tolerate.

Who It’s For

If you’re looking for a smooth sound that’s easy to mesh with your current system, the Kenwood KSC-PSW8 Under Seat Powered Subwoofer is one of the best options. It’s perfect for shoppers who don’t need too much base but want to even out their vehicle’s sound. Why We Like It: We Like the BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer because of its flexibility and value. It has an affordable price tag, great size options, and tons of features.

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Quick Facts:

The BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is one of the most well-rounded products on the list. You can get the speaker in 10 or 8 inches with both options providing a bass-boost feature that’s bound to impress you and your passages. The speaker also comes with customization options for low-pass filters, bass boost, phase control, and even a remote control. It’s one of the easiest under seat speakers to use, install, and control.

What Sets It Apart

The BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a special product because of its value. It’s one of the more affordable options, even if you go with the 10-inch, 1,200-watt speaker. That said, it performs better than most expensive speakers and gives you the flexibility to customize your listening experience. Plus, it even comes with a remote to operate if you need to make changes quickly.

Things to Consider

The BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a good speaker but it does have some drawbacks. The biggest drawback is the break-in period. Because the speaker has a lot of wattage and bass, you have to spend 3-4 hours breaking the speaker in. Doing so will prevent premature failure and poor speaker performance. If you’re looking for a less risky speaker, the KICKER 46HS10 Compact Powered 10-inch Subwoofer is a great 10-inch alternative, and the Kenwood KSC-PSW8 Under Seat Powered Subwoofer is a great 8-inch alternative.

Who It’s For

The BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a great choice if you’re looking to get the most bass for your buck. It’s one of the loudest speakers around and it comes with many customization options to suit your needs. For all of the bass heads out there, this speaker is the one you want.

Why We Like It: The Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is one of our favorite products because of how compact it is. It’s one of the smallest under seat speakers, so it should fit in almost every vehicle.

Editor’s Rating: 4/5

Quick Facts:

The Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is a small speaker that can fit under almost any seat. While it’s one of the smaller speakers available for under seat usage, it packs a punch and the 8-inch speaker provides smooth bass that won’t shake your vehicle. It also features a durable aluminum shield and remote control for quick changes to the base. Overall, it’s a solid speaker for its size, price, and sound quality.

What Sets It Apart

The Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is like no other under-seat speaker because of its shape and size. Instead of being square or rectangular, the circle shape helps the speaker produce a similar sound at a smaller size. Moreover, the product can maintain an inexpensive price despite the innovative design. It’s also one of the few under seat speakers that comes with everything you need to install it.

Things to Consider

The Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is a solid product but it’s not perfect. This is evident in the speaker’s lack of wattage capabilities. Most under seat speakers will have wattage specifications above 200 but this product can only handle 120 watts. Unfortunately, this increases the risk of damaging the speaker if too much power flows through it. If you’re looking for a higher wattage model, the BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a great alternative. It has 800-watt and 1,200-watt options.

Who It’s For

The Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is perfect for shoppers who drive smaller vehicles. If you don’t have a lot of space in your cabin this under seat speaker is your best option. While it’s the smallest under seat speaker we feature, the sound quality isn’t bad and it can enhance your car’s stock sound system.

Editor’s Rating: 4/5

Quick Facts:

The Sound Storm Laboratories LOPRO8 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a well-rounded speaker. While we feature the 8-inch model, Sound Storm Laboratories also has a 10-inch, 1,200-watt option you can also choose. This gives the shopper the ability to find a speaker size that works for them –we appreciate the flexibility there. The speaker also features a durable aluminum shielding that protects it from the elements and plenty of input options to customize the sound quality.

What Sets It Apart

The Sound Storm Laboratories LOPRO8 Amplified Car Subwoofer is unique because of the inputs and sound options it comes with. There is a control system to help you tinker with all of these settings and the sound the speaker produces is impressive for its price and size.

Things to Consider

Sound Storm Laboratories did a great job with these 600-watt and 1,200-watt speakers. That said, they’re not perfect and come with a few flaws. The primary issue is that the installation process is complicated and Sound Storm Laboratories doesn’t provide you with all of the wirings. If you’re looking for a speaker that’s easier to install, the Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is a great alternative.

Why We Like It: We love the BLAUPUNKT GTHS131 200W 10″ CAR Under SEAT Super Slim Powered SUBWOOFER Enclosed because of its size. It’s one of the smallest products you can find and one of the best choices for vehicles.

Editor’s Rating: 4/5

Quick Facts:

The BLAUPUNKT GTHS131 200W 10″ CAR Under SEAT Super Slim Powered SUBWOOFER Enclosed is a small speaker that packs a punch. It’s a small speaker with a 10-inch subwoofer that performs as well as larger products. It’s built with a durable aluminum frame that keeps it well-protected and comes with everything needed for installation. While the sound can be choppy at times, this can be overcome with a proper break in period.

What Sets It Apart

The BLAUPUNKT GTHS131 200W 10″ CAR Under SEAT Super Slim Powered SUBWOOFER Enclosed is a unique subwoofer because of its size. Most speakers that are less than 2.7 inches tall can’t handle a 10-inch speaker but this Blaupunkt product handles it well. Moreover, it produces an impressive sound for its size, even if it does cause some shaking and rattling.

Things to Consider

We’re big fans of the BLAUPUNKT GTHS131 200W 10″ CAR Under SEAT Super Slim Powered SUBWOOFER Enclosed but it’s not perfect. While it’s one of the few small speakers with a 10-inch subwoofer, the small size doesn’t accommodate the larger speaker. This can cause the product to shake and rattle. If you need a 10-inch subwoofer that doesn’t rattle, the Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max is a great choice.

Who It’s For

The BLAUPUNKT GTHS131 200W 10″ CAR Under SEAT Super Slim Powered SUBWOOFER Enclosed is one of the smallest products around. If you’re someone who doesn’t have a ton of space, this product will accommodate you well. It should fit under most seats and in most cases it will leave you additional room under the seat. Therefore, it’s the best option for people who don’t have a lot of space.

Everything You Need to Know About Under Seat Subwoofers

Taking a look at the best under seat subwoofers is a good start. Still, it’s not always easy to understand your needs just by looking at products. For this reason, we’re going to take you through everything you need to know about under seat subwoofers to help you narrow down your options.

We’ll be explaining the features in detail and making product recommendations along the way.

Getting Started

Upgrading your vehicle’s sound system sounds fun until you have to work with wires, find the right harnesses, and learn about how they connect to the rest of your car’s stereo. The good news is that you can get started with a simple under seat subwoofer like the Rockville SS8P 400 Watt Slim Under-Seat Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer. It’s one of the few products that come with the harnesses you need for installation, the wires needed to connect it to your car’s battery, and more.

That said, if you plan on installing the subwoofer yourself it’s important to get an idea of what that process looks like. There is a great video for Kenwood products like the Kenwood KSC-PSW8 Under Seat Powered Subwoofer. Still, we always recommend getting subwoofers professionally installed if you’re not familiar with the process.

While installing these systems is tricky, the sound is almost always worth the wait.

8-Inch Vs. 10-Inch Subwoofers

One of the most important things to consider before making a choice is the speaker size. The common sizes are 8 inches and 10 inches –for under seat subwoofers at least. While both sizes are viable options, each type suits different needs.

8-inch subwoofers are more compact and easier to fit in tight spaces. These products are also the easiest to install. The sound produced by 8-inch speakers isn’t bad but it’s not the best, especially compared to 10-inch speakers. Therefore, we recommend 8-inch products for people who have small vehicles and don’t want to experience the shaking effect that comes with high bass levels. A great 8-inch speaker to start with is the Kenwood KSC-PSW8 Under Seat Powered Subwoofer.

While 8-inch speakers are solid options, you can also go with 10-inch subwoofers. These subwoofers are larger, more powerful, and louder than 8-inch products. Moreover, 10-inch speakers can achieve better bass levels and a wider range of sound. The drawback to a bigger speaker is that they take up more space and might cause your vehicle to shake if it’s bass-boosted. Our favorite choice for 10-inch subwoofers is the Cerwin-Vega VPAS10 10″ 2Ω 550W Max.

Before choosing a subwoofer make sure you understand how much room you have in your vehicle and how much tolerance you have for shaking and sound quality.

High Wattage Vs. Low Wattage

The wattage rating of a speaker determines how much power it can handle. While high-wattage speakers tend to be more powerful than low-wattage speakers, that doesn’t always mean one is louder than the other. Therefore, you should consider the wattage level that you’re planning on running through the speaker before making your choice. It doesn’t always pay to have a high-wattage speaker if you can’t run high levels of wattage through the amplifier.

That said, getting even tones and a wider range of frequencies is possible with higher wattage speakers. This is because more air needs to be pushed through the system for low frequencies, which requires high wattage levels.

If you’re shopping for a low-wattage product, which is what we recommend starting with, the Recoil SL1708 400 Watt 8″ Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer is a great place to start. It’s one of the lowest wattage speakers available. The sound is great but it doesn’t handle low frequencies as well as higher wattage products. Still, it’s a great place to start if you’re looking to add bass without worrying about the range of sound too much.

If you can run high-wattage speakers you don’t want to risk blowing your system with a low-wattage speaker. In these cases, a product like the BOSS Audio Systems BAB10 Amplified Car Subwoofer is a great choice.

The difference in wattage depends on what you’re looking for. Higher wattage speakers tend to perform better at each frequency range, while low wattage speakers struggle at lower frequencies.

Under Seat Subwoofers FAQ

Can You Put Subwoofers Under Seats?

Yes, you can put subwoofers and other speakers under your seats. Most vehicles will have about 3-5 inches of clearance under the driver and passenger seat, so 8-inch and 10-inch subwoofers can fit. That said, we always recommend taking measurements before getting your hands on one.

Are Under Seat Subwoofers Any Good?

Yes, under seat subwoofers have gotten better over the years and are good speakers. While they don’t provide the same sound as larger trunk-based subwoofers, companies make specific products designed to function well under your seats.

What Is the Smallest Under Seat Subwoofer?
